How heavy do you need to lift, to be able to build muscle after 40? Good question…well you might be surprised, but you don’t need to lift heavy weights to build muscle. If you have lingering injuries, that is okay, you can use lighter weights to not put stress on your joints from previous injuries.
If your goal is to gain strength then you need to lift heavy with low reps. If your goal is to build muscle then you want to lift lighter weights with more reps. Light weight is different for everybody, you want to aim for the 8-12 rep range to build muscle. You want to be near failure at the end of the rep range, that is how you know if you are lifting a heavy enough weight.
Lifting with lighter weights and high reps is going to protect your joints from new injuries, or agitating previous injuries.
