I have been doing health and fitness for a long time now, and I have learned a lot along the way. Today, I wanted to give you at least 4 of the important things of advice I have gotten, or learned over the years from experience.

Wow… where do I start?

When I first started working out I was 20 years old, and it was 1982. So… there was no internet, almost no gyms, no supplements, and no information on nutrition or workout routines. We just “winged it”.

So, here are the 4 items of advice that I would give to you that I have learned on my fitness journey, that can hopefully help you!

1. It took years for me to realize the importance of having a science-based program to follow for my workouts. And this means not just the exercises themselves, but also the order in which they are done, the number of reps and sets for each exercise, and how often to do these workouts. This means you have to take into account rest and recovery, and I never did when I was younger.

2. It wasn’t until I was in my late 40s that I learned how important nutrition was. That is a long time of lifting weights and not getting as much out of my workouts as I could have. That’s when I learned that “abs” really are made in the kitchen. Some bodybuilders don’t even work their abs, but they still look unbelievable. So nutrition has an enormous effect on how much fat you hold onto, AND… how much muscle you can build.

3. I was always concerned with putting on more muscle, which typically means gaining weight…. Right? Well not exactly. I cared too much about the scale, and not enough about the mirror. You can actually lose weight (i.e. body fat percentage) and look WAY bigger and more muscular even though you weigh less. I see too many men wanting to add weight, when in fact they already have way too much body fat.

4. Finally… I would say I learned the importance of consistency. And that doesn’t just mean my workouts. It also means my nutrition. So many guys I talk to tell me their nutrition is really good about 80% of the time, but they are frustrated that their fat loss has plateaued. Well… 80% is not enough. Your nutrition has to be on point the vast majority of the time to get really lean. I’m not talking about perfection, but “cheating” on your nutrition 20% of the time won’t get you where you want to be.

I hope this advice can help you on your fitness journey because it is never too late to make changes. Start getting better results with some or all of these tips!
